SEEHUND Sub at Gilmore Hall
US Submarine Base, New London
Circa 1947
A small German (2 man) submarine used during WWII in the North Sea area to sink ships going to Russia. In May of 1945, they ran 142 patrols and sank 8 or 9 ships; losing about the same number. The Germans had about 90 of these vessels; also reffered to as Type 27.
After hostilities with Germany, the Navy brought two of them over, with crews and mechanics and ran tests down in the Carribean. The Navy built one, but the project was soon abandoned.
